There’s more to PM Modi’s ‘Visit Lakshadweep’ pitch than meets the eye

Lakshadweep has a strategic location near a country seeing increasing closeness with China, and has a Muslim-dominated population - all of which are key factors ahead of the vital Lok Sabha elections.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday shared pictures from his Lakshadweep visit where he interacted with local people, enjoyed the view of the pristine coastline and went snorkelling. "I am still in awe of the stunning beauty of its (Lakshadweep) islands and the incredible warmth of its people," he wrote on X (formerly Twitter) and shared several pictures.

The Union territory was a stop on PM Modi's packed two-day itinerary of the South - Tamil Nadu and Kerala being the other two states - ahead of the crucial 2024 Lok Sabha polls. He inaugurated and laid the foundation stone of multiple developmental projects worth more than Rs 1,150 crore in Lakshadweep and mentioned various others that have been completed over the past 10 years of his government.

Marvelled by Lakshadweep's scenic beauty, PM Modi pitched the archipelago as a must tourist destination for Indians. This was his first trip of 2024 and the beginning of the BJP's 'Mission South' ahead of the elections.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah echoed PM Modi's tourism push in Lakshadweep, praising the archipelago's "mesmerising beaches, blue water lagoons and much more".

"Lakshadweep has immense potential to become a global tourist destination. Gratitude to PM Narendra Modi Ji for promoting Lakshadweep, this will surely boost tourism, and the economy and thus elevate the living standards of its people," Amit Shah posted on X.
