Crypto market leader Wintermute lost $160 million to hack, CEO says

London: Hackers stole digital assets worth around $160 million from crypto trading firm Wintermute, its CEO tweeted on Tuesday, the latest heist to hit a company long plagued by cyber crime.
The theft was based on the financial services of London-based Wintermute, Evgeny Gaevoy said in a tweet. The company, which provides liquidity in the main exchanges of Crypto and trading platforms, remains solvent after the hack, he added.

Decentralized platforms and financial software, which aim to provide financial services based on cryptography without traditional guardians such as banks, have been targeted by many burglaries in recent years. The Sector Is Little-Regulated And Victims Of Crime Rarely Have Recourse.

Gaevoy And Wintermute Did Not Immediately Respond To Requests For Comment. Wintermute calls itself "one of the biggest players" in the global crypto market. It says it manages "hundreds of millions" of assets and trades more than $5 billion a day. Gaevoy said on Twitter "There will be disruption in our services today and possibly for the next few days", adding that some 90 assets have been damaged.

"If you're a Wintermute borrower, again, we're a creditor, but if you're comfortable recalling the loan, we'll be able to," Gaevoy said.
