    2,203 cows vaccinated against lumpy virus in Mumbai

    Amid the outbreak of skin disease in cattle, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has started vaccination against the disease and so far the municipal body has vaccinated 2,203 cows in Mumbai.

    According to data from the local community, 2,203 cows have been vaccinated so far, while the remaining cows will be vaccinated next week. According to the notification issued by the state government, the BMC administration is continuously taking various measures in the municipal area keeping in view the possibility of an outbreak of a lumpy virus.

    The virus is mainly found in cattle and the pesticide department has also started fogging and pest control measures in cowsheds and surrounding areas. BMC Commissioner Dr. Iqbal Singh Chahal, Additional Municipal Commissioner (City) Ashish Sharma and Deputy Commissioner (Special) Sanjog Kabare next to the Veterinary Health Department.

    According to the 2019 animal census, there are 3,226 cows and 24,388 buffaloes in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation area. Among these, vaccination is given as the first step to prevent lumpy nodules.

    Deonar Slaughterhouse Veterinary Health Department director and general manager has said that the remaining cows will be vaccinated next week. This virus is found only in cows and buffaloes. It is safe for humans to eat meat or use milk from animals that do not show signs of Lumpy. Animals can be treated by Lumpy, however, milk from these animals can be affected due to infection.

    According to reports, lumpy skin disease is a viral disease that affects cattle. It is transmitted by blood-sucking insects, such as certain types of flies and mosquitoes, or ticks. It causes fever and nodules on the skin which can lead to the death of the cow. Meanwhile, to help the livestock of the country, the Minister for Agriculture and Farmers Narendra Singh Tomar launched the indigenous vaccine Lumpi-ProVac on August 10 to protect livestock from skin diseases meat.

    The vaccine was developed by the National Equine Research Centre, Hisar (Haryana) in collaboration with the Indian Veterinary Research Institute, Izzatnagar (Bareilly). Since the disease reached India in 2019, research institutions have been involved in the development of vaccines.
