Telcos may double investments to strengthen 5G network security

Indian mobile phone operators are expected to at least double their investments on network security with the 5G rollout expected to spark a surge in network vulnerabilities, which assume critical importance especially for enterprises, experts said.
“Going forward, we will see 25-30% of the IT budgets being dedicated to (network) security.
Not only will they have to secure the network on the backend, but also will have to ensure they monitor the data flow (on the consumer end) since it is expected to rise 5-10 times once 5G is fully launched,” said Chetan Jain, managing director, Inspira Enterprise , a cybersecurity risk management firm.
Vodafone Idea and Bharti Airtel did not respond to queries ET sent at press time.
While the need for security in the age of 5G is paramount, telcos are likely to face challenges.
With greater data traffic, more IoT devices, consumer and enterprise, getting connected to their networks, telcos will need sophisticated AI modules for threat detection and addressal.
